Early Life and Education

Born on July 31, 1972, in San Diego, California, David Shaw grew up in a family with a strong football tradition. His father, Willie Shaw, was a longtime assistant coach in the NFL and college football. Shaw excelled in football at La Jolla High School, where he was named the Gatorade Circle of Champions National Football Player of the Year in 1990.

After graduating from high school, Shaw attended Stanford University, where he played quarterback for the Stanford Cardinal football team. He was a two-year starter and led the Cardinal to an undefeated regular season in 1992. Shaw also earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Stanford in 1994.

Early Coaching Career

Following his playing career, Shaw entered the coaching profession. He began as a graduate assistant at Western Washington University in 1995 and then spent two seasons as a wide receivers coach at the University of San Diego. In 1999, Shaw joined Jim Harbaugh's staff at Western Michigan University, where he served as the quarterbacks coach.

In 2002, Shaw followed Harbaugh to the University of San Diego, where he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2003. In 2004, Shaw joined Harbaugh's staff at the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as offensive coordinator until 2005.

Return to Stanford as Head Coach

In 2006, Shaw returned to Stanford as the offensive coordinator under Harbaugh. When Harbaugh left Stanford to become the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 2011, Shaw was promoted to head coach.

Under Shaw's leadership, Stanford has become one of the most successful football programs in the Pac-12 Conference. He has led the Cardinal to three Pac-12 championships (2012, 2015, 2017) and has been named Pac-12 Conference Coach of the Year twice (2012, 2017).
