Desperate times: Reddit considers adding ID verification to fight flood of AI bots

Reddit is grappling with a significant issue regarding the proliferation of AI bots on its platform. To combat this growing problem, the company is exploring the implementation of ID verification, a solution that has gained traction across the tech industry.

During a recent appearance on the tech show TBPN, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman addressed the challenges posed by AI and shared some potential strategies the platform might adopt. The core question driving their exploration is, 'Is there actually a human using Reddit right now?'

Balancing Verification and Anonymity

Huffman emphasized that Reddit is fundamentally a platform designed for human interaction. He elaborated on various verification processes that are currently being considered. The simplest proposed method involves technologies such as Face ID or Touch ID, which fall under the broader category of passkeys. He noted, 'Every platform wants to know, is this a person? Now Reddit's version is, is this a person but we don't want to know which person this is.'

This distinction is crucial for Reddit, which has built its reputation on user anonymity. Huffman further explained that while there are more intensive forms of ID verification, like ID checking services, the company already complies with these where mandated by government regulations. However, he made it clear that they are not inclined to implement such stringent measures broadly to address the bot issue.

Community Concerns

Alexis Ohanian, a co-founder of Reddit who stepped down from the board in 2020, expressed his support for efforts to mitigate the bot problem. However, he cautioned that any approach taken must not alienate the platform's user base. He commented, 'RDDT requiring Face ID was not something I had on my bingo card but something has got to be done about all the fake/botted content — I just don't know how to sell face-scanning to redditors or even lurkers.'

In his interview, Huffman also acknowledged the potential benefits of AI, mentioning positive use cases such as auto-translation bots. Nonetheless, he stressed the importance of ensuring that real humans are behind any bots operating on the platform.

The Rise of AI Bots

Reddit has been dealing with automated accounts and content farms for years, where users submit posts and manipulate the upvote system. The recent surge in AI technology has exacerbated this issue, leading to an influx of AI bots that mimic real users and respond to genuine user posts with spammy content.

Since 2024, changes in Google's search algorithms have significantly increased Reddit's visibility in search results, attracting spammers who exploit this visibility as a tactic for search engine optimization (SEO). This influx only adds to the urgency of Reddit's efforts to find a viable solution.

Looking Ahead

As Reddit navigates these challenges, the choice of ID verification method will be critical. Given the platform's diverse and often vocal user base, any new implementation is likely to face scrutiny and pushback. The balance between enhancing user security and preserving the core value of anonymity will be a key focus as Reddit moves forward in addressing the bot dilemma.
