Early Life and Education

William Edward Haslam was born on August 23, 1958, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Jim Haslam, a businessman, and Nancy Burnette Haslam. He has four siblings: Jimmy Haslam, CEO of Pilot Flying J, Ann Haslam, Jennie McCabe, Carol Pattison, and Susan Robie. Haslam attended Webb School of Knoxville and the University of Tennessee, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He later attended the University of Virginia Darden School of Business,?where he earned an MBA.

Career

Haslam began his career in the family business, Pilot Flying J, a truck stop chain founded by his father. He worked his way up the company ladder and eventually became CEO in 1999. Under his leadership, Pilot Flying J grew into one of the largest truck stop chains in the United States.

In 2003, Haslam was elected mayor of Knoxville. He served two terms as mayor and oversaw a number of improvements to the city, including the construction of a new convention center and the revitalization of downtown Knoxville.

In 2010, Haslam was elected governor of Tennessee. He was re-elected in 2014. As governor, Haslam focused on improving education, job creation, and infrastructure. He also signed into law a number of conservative measures, including tax cuts and gun rights legislation.
